Description

Moldovan journalists, NGO leaders and activists feel increasingly threatened and persecuted by their own government. How much worse can the situation get?

Viktorija Rusinaite, a researcher into Belarusian NGOs, will give us some background to the story and discuss the situation in more detail. Rusinaite, a Lithuanian researcher and activist will speak about the barriers for civil society organisations in Belarus. She will explain what is going on in Belarus and why some activists choose to migrate or live between two countries to influence the country’s civic sector. Based on the interviews she conducted with political nomads, Viktorija will present some examples of what motivates people to carry out their work under these extreme circumstances. She’ll also discuss how a nomadic lifestyle helps overcome some obstacles whilst also creating new ones.

The talk will be followed by a discussion. How much worse can the situation for NGOs in Moldova get and what can be done about it? Join the conversation with one of the leading experts in the field.

All are welcome in C51 at 18:00 on Saturday, September 29. Entrance to the event is 70 lei. The event will be held in English.

Viktorija Rusinaite defended her PhD thesis on Belarusian Political Nomadism in 2017. She explored multiple situations of ‘in-betweenness’ experienced by activists, journalists and artists living an enforced nomadic lifestyle between Belarus and Lithuania.

The talk is the first of the series of events organised by the Baltic journalism and research agency fixers.press. The series of events to take place in Chisinau are intended to encourage cooperation between international correspondents, fixers and NGOs.

Places are limited, we encourage you to buy a ticket in advance.
