5 Broken Cameras is a documentary focusing on the Israeli regime’s land grab in the village of Bil’in (which has come to occupy up to 60% of farmland), in the process of building a wall for the Jewish settlement of Modi’in Illit. The film documents meticulously, over a 5-years long period, the non-violent resistance that followed and is structured around the perpetual destruction of Emad Burnat’s cameras, a villager increasingly involved in Bil’in’s fight. The documentary manages, thanks to this very special angle, to combine the intimate and the political in a very moving way, as images of Emad Burnat’s family are repeatedly shown alongside fragments of the atrocities committed in the village. In a few words, this award-winning documentary is a complete, important and unique testimony of the palestinian sufferings.

The screening is part of the project Safe spaces for culture workers from Ukraine and Republic of Moldova. It is organized to provide elements of context for our local audience regarding the intensifying violence in palestinian territory since October 2023. It will be moderated by the local activist Constanța Dohotaru and will be followed by a “Q&A” session.
Warning: the film shows scenes of violence.

The film is in Arabic, with English subtitles.
The meeting will be held in Romanian.

Emad Burnat [PS] is a self-taught filmmaker and a farmer from Bil’in, Palestine. 5 Broken Cameras is the only work of his filmography and retraces the early years of his activism.

This event is organized by Oberliht Association in the frame of the project Safe spaces for culture workers from Ukraine and Republic of Moldova with the support of ECF (European Cultural Fundation). It is hosted in Zpace.
