In 2016 and 2017 an Estonian journalist Marian Männi wrote a series of articles about Martin Repinski, the newly appointed Estonian Minister of Rural Affairs. She described his lies, illegal activities and showed how Repinski's image as a successful farm-owner/businessman was largely fake.
As a journalist of a weekly investigative newspaper Eesti Ekspress, Marian used facts and stories shared by the ordinary people, but the minister responded with more lies.
As the scandal grew, more people started asking questions and the young minister was under spotlight.
Eventually, Repinski was forced to step down after only two weeks in office.
In a few months, Marian won the Bonnier Award, the most prestigious investigative journalism award in Estonia for her articles.
Marian will talk about her journey in the second Freedom Talks meetup.
